An interesting question indeed. Especially in light of the rising cost of food. Will we continue to gorge ourselves when it costs $25 just to drive to the restaurant and our meals cost 5% more than before?

Interesting idea, that food, to some degree, has lost its meaning and significance as nourishment and instead has become just another vehicle for competition. One thing I've noticed about Top Chef is that many times the judges don't even talk about how a competitor's food tastes, but how it was presented or the story that went with it, like the narrative is somehow more important than how it tastes.

Jen, you're the only one of your peers who commented on this scene in Thin, and you've totally nailed it: that scene serves to make us ALL complicit in contributing to these women's disorders. "DON'T GET FAT!" How many of us tell that to ourselves, even though we wouldn't say it to anyone else? The tattooist was simply giving voice to the oppressive mantra in these women's heads, but also in most (I suspect) "normal" women's heads, too.

All great points, Jen. The big new thing lately is to scrutinize celebrities' ability to lose weight after pregnancy. It seems the expectation is for these women to look just as perfect (only with bigger boobs) six weeks after delivery as they did before they had their baby bump.

It does seem that women are subject to much more scrutiny/anxiety about their weight losses and gains than men.

Well, I think what Pollan is arguing in this chapter that we have LOST the pastoral ideal, what you're describing here as complete dependency on grass. In the previous chapters, he's set up our dependency on corn (remember, we are walking corn) and then uses this chapter to describe the pastoral, grass-based ideal that Joel Salatin recaptures at Polyface Farm.

Very interesting. So, are you saying that ethos + pathos can sometimes = logos?
